What is PVD plating on jewelry?

PVD (physical vapor deposition) is a plating process where a thin layer of metal is bonded to jewelry in a vacuum chamber. It creates a harder, more durable finish than traditional electroplating, so the color resists fading, scratching, and tarnishing. PVD is commonly used on stainless steel to create gold and rose gold jewelry that can be worn in water.

At See Sea Jewelry, we use PVD plating on stainless steel so our gold-tone pieces keep their color through everyday wear.

Is stainless steel jewelry good quality?

Yes. Stainless steel is a strong, corrosion-resistant metal that does not rust, tarnish, or bend easily, which makes it well suited for jewelry worn every day. Quality depends on the grade of steel and the finish, with surgical-grade stainless steel being a common choice for jewelry because it is durable and gentle on skin.

See Sea Jewelry uses stainless steel as the base for our waterproof jewelry because it holds up to water, sweat, and daily use.

What is the difference between stainless steel and sterling silver jewelry?

Sterling silver is 92.5% silver mixed with other metals, usually copper, and it naturally tarnishes over time when exposed to air, water, and moisture. Stainless steel is harder, more scratch-resistant, and does not tarnish, so it needs less care. Sterling silver is a precious metal, while stainless steel is valued mainly for its durability and low maintenance.

See Sea Jewelry focuses on stainless steel for pieces that can be worn daily without polishing.

Does waterproof jewelry rust?

No. Waterproof jewelry made from stainless steel does not rust under normal wear, because the metal contains chromium, which forms a protective layer on its surface. Jewelry sold as waterproof but made from plated brass or copper may discolor over time, so it helps to check the base metal before buying.

All See Sea Jewelry pieces are made with a stainless steel base so they won't rust with daily exposure to water.

Can you wear waterproof jewelry to the gym?

Yes. Waterproof jewelry can be worn during workouts because sweat does not tarnish stainless steel or PVD plating. For weightlifting or contact sports, it's still a good idea to remove rings and long necklaces to avoid scratches and snagging.

See Sea Jewelry designs waterproof pieces for active lifestyles, from workouts to the beach.
